Persistent Cough and Chest Infection Assessment in Markham and Scarborough
A cough that disrupts sleep or does not settle deserves attention, especially when it comes with fever, wheezing or reduced exercise tolerance. At Warden Wood Health Centre, a non-emergency assessment can help determine whether you need symptom management, investigation or further care.
What causes a persistent cough?
Common causes include a recent viral infection, nasal drainage, asthma, reflux and exposure to smoke or other irritants. Some medications can also cause cough. A chest infection may involve the larger airways or the lungs, and pneumonia needs a different approach from an uncomplicated viral cough.
What happens during a cough assessment?
Your doctor asks about duration, sputum, fever, breathlessness, smoking or vaping, medications and medical history. Examination may include listening to your lungs and checking oxygen levels when indicated. A chest X-ray or other testing may be ordered through an appropriate diagnostic service; this does not mean imaging is available on site.
Treatment depends on the cause. Inhalers, reflux management or other options may be discussed. Antibiotics are not routinely helpful for viral bronchitis, and sputum colour alone cannot establish that antibiotics are needed.
Symptoms that should not wait
Severe breathlessness, significant chest pain, coughing up blood or confusion needs urgent assessment. Call 911 if breathing is severely impaired.
Persistent cough FAQs
Can a cough continue after a cold?
Yes. Airway irritation can persist after an infection. A worsening or prolonged cough should still be reviewed.
Will I need a chest X-ray?
Not always. Your examination, symptoms and risk factors guide that decision.
Can asthma cause a cough without obvious wheezing?
Yes. Cough can be an asthma symptom, but other causes should be considered.
What should I bring to the appointment?
Bring a medication list and note when the cough began, what triggers it and any associated fever or breathing changes.
