Sprain, Strain and Sports Injury Assessment in Markham and Scarborough

A twisted ankle, pulled muscle or sore joint can make walking, work and exercise difficult. A medical assessment helps distinguish a minor soft-tissue injury from a fracture, tendon injury or another problem. Warden Wood Health Centre can assess non-emergency injuries and guide the next step.

Sprains and strains explained

A sprain affects a ligament that supports a joint; a strain affects a muscle or tendon. Both may cause pain, swelling, bruising and reduced movement. The amount of swelling does not reliably show how serious an injury is.

Tell your clinician how the injury happened, whether you heard a pop, and whether you could walk or use the limb afterward. Previous injuries and your usual activities also matter.

Assessment and recovery planning

The examination may check tenderness, joint stability, movement, strength and circulation. Imaging is ordered when clinically indicated and may take place at an external facility. Treatment can include protecting the injury initially, suitable pain relief and a gradual return to movement and loading.

Rehabilitation may be useful when pain, weakness or instability persists. Warden Wood’s rehabilitation service lists Markham and Scarborough appointments; ask which provider is appropriate for your injury.

When an injury needs urgent assessment

An obvious deformity, a cold or numb limb, severe pain, inability to bear weight after a significant injury or suspected tendon rupture needs prompt assessment.

Sports injury FAQs

Do I need an X-ray for a sprained ankle?

Not always. Your examination and ability to bear weight help determine whether imaging is needed.

Should I stay completely inactive?

Some protection may be needed initially, but prolonged inactivity is not appropriate for every injury. Follow a tailored recovery plan.

When can I return to sport?

Return depends on pain, movement, strength and sport demands, rather than a fixed number of days.

Can rehabilitation help an old injury?

It may. Persistent instability or weakness deserves reassessment and a suitable exercise plan.
