Cervical Screening and HPV Testing in Markham and Scarborough

If you are looking for a Pap test appointment, Ontario’s routine screening approach has changed. HPV-based cervical screening replaced the Pap test in March 2025. Contact Warden Wood Health Centre to discuss whether you are due and to confirm screening appointments at your preferred branch.

Who is eligible for cervical screening?

Ontario’s program generally includes people with a cervix who are at least 25, have ever had sexual contact, have an OHIP number, have no relevant symptoms and are due for screening. Most eligible people are screened every five years, but previous results and immune status can change the interval. Your clinician can confirm your schedule.

What happens during an HPV screening appointment?

A clinician collects a sample from the cervix using a small brush, in a procedure similar to a Pap test. The laboratory checks for high-risk HPV, with additional assessment of cell changes when indicated. Ask about comfort measures, a chaperone and what to expect before consenting.

Understanding the result

A positive HPV result does not mean you have cancer. Follow-up depends on the HPV type, cell findings and history. Keep your contact information current and confirm how results and any next steps will be communicated.

Cervical screening FAQs

Is this the same as a Pap test?

The sample collection feels similar, but HPV testing is now the first screening test used in Ontario’s routine program.

Do I still need screening after HPV vaccination?

Yes, if you meet screening eligibility. Vaccination does not replace screening.

Does this test check for all STIs?

No. Other STI tests need a separate discussion and appropriate samples.

Should I book routine screening for unusual bleeding?

Report the symptom when booking. Symptoms need diagnostic assessment, which may differ from routine screening.
